Salvia lanceolata
Salvia
lanceolata is an evergreen shrub native to South Africa which grows 2-4
feet tall and as wide. Leaves are silvery gray and flowers are yellow
and rose mauve. It blooms in Spring and Summer. (The flowers are
actually an unusual color that is hard to describe). Clay soils need to
be amended for good growth. It prefers moderate to low water as
overwatering can kill the plant. It is best in full sun.
Dudleya

Dudleya
is a ground hugging succulent with rosettes of gray-green leaves that
appear to be covered with chalky powder. Small yellow flowers appear in
Spring or Summer. It needs afternoon shade to bright shade, excellent
drainage, and usually no overhead water. They should be sheltered from
hard rain and frost. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds.

leaves and yellow flowers. It is native to Northern California and
Southern Oregon.

is native to the Eastern and Central United States. It grows 2 feet
tall and as wide. Slender, upright stems carry toothed leaves. In
Summer or early Fall, each stem is topped by a 10 inch spike of pink
tubular flowers which make and excellent flower. The flower will remain
in place if twisted or pushed out of position, hence the name Obedient
Plant. Best in full sun or partial shade with moderate water. Do not
overwater or this vigorous plant may spread too much.

shade, good drainage and moderate to occasional water. Native to South
Africa , Dymondia is sometimes used as a companion in bonsais.
What Looks Good in My Garden
Right Now
Juncus
– Rush
This
choice may surprise you; I know it surprised me. My Juncus has a group
of narrow cylindrical, olive green stems that stand straight up like a
group of little soldiers in a huddle. The stems have small,
inconspicuous, light tawny brown flowers near the tips. It seems to do
fine out in the sun with low to regular water although I know there are
some Juncus that like more shade and water. This Juncus is absolutely
disease and pest free and requires no care. It’s not showy,
but it hold its own in my mixed garden. (Editor’s notes: for
you California native plant fanciers, there are native Juncus)
