Salvia clevelandii

Salvia clevelandii (California native

S. Clevelandii is an evergreen shrub from Southern California with a rounded, arching growth pattern to 3'-5' high and 5'-8' wide. It has wrinkled, toothed gray-green leaves to 2" long which are lance shaped and very fragrant. Fragrant inch-long pale lavender to violet-blue flowers are in widely spaced whorls along 1½'-2' stems. Clevelandii flowers after other California natives have bloomed and passed their prime. May or June is the usual time of blooming and lasts 3-4 weeks. You can remove faded flower spikes to encourage rebloom. It needs fast drainage, full sun, good air circulation and very little additional water after the plant is established. It is also drought tolerant and hardy to 20ºF. We propagate from cuttings taken in Spring before flowers and new wood are formed.

New Additions to the Dollar Plant Section

Salvia lyrata has been added to our Dollar Section. Lyrata has a lyre shaped dark making on its leaves, thus its name, has dark purple attractive flowers, grows in a mound and is tough and drought tolerant. Reseeds freely but seedlings are easy to remove.
