Aronia Melanocarpa (Black Chokeberry)
February 5, 2008 - Aronia and Yarrow: Aronia is a tough undemanding shrub which is useful as a filler or background planting. It grows 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. In spring, it has a massive display of white flowers followed by inedible but highly decorative and brightly colored blue-black fruit and purple-red fall foliage. Summer foliage is dark green.
Aronia grows well in almost any soil and moisture conditions. It should be planted in full sun to part shade and given regular water. Maintenance includes pruning oldest stems to ground in late winter and restricting height and increasing bushiness by heading back upright stems. Aronia is available in 5 gallon containers in the Markham Nursery.

Achillea millefolium (Yarrow)

Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) is a good drought tolerant plant. Our "Yarrow Queen" volunteer has been dividing her collection of Yarrows and so we have a good selection for sale. Here's our availability list:
,Achillea millefolium californicum (white)–California native
,Achillea millefolium 'Pink Island Fsorm' (rose pink)–Clifornia native
,Achillea millefolium 'Sonoma Coast '(white)–California native
,Achillea millefolium 'Cerise Queen' (Cerise Red)
,Achillea millefolium filipendula 'Parker's Gold' (bright yellow)

Achilleas (example: Cerise Queen at left) are a carefree, generously blooming perennial for summer and early fall. Its foliage is gray or green, bitter-aromatic and usually finely dissected. Flower heads are usually in flatish clusters. Achilleas only need routine care: some watering (drought tolerant once established); cutting back after blooming; and dividing when clumps become too crowded. Achilleas need full sun. Available in the Markham Nursery in gallons and 4 inch containers.
