Rosa nutkana
(Nootka Rose)
This California native rose can
widen into a thicket of dark, sparsely thorned, somewhat arching stems
carrying gray-green leaves with sharply toothed margins. Nutkana is deciduous
and blooms in Spring bearing single pink 2 ½ inch blossoms. The flowers are
followed by round ¾ inch showy red hips in fall and winter which are valued
for wildlife. This is a good habitat plant.
Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla)
We have one Norfolk Island Pine
available in a 5 gallon pot. (resembles picture on left). I know this is the
wrong time of year to suggest, but Norfolk Island Pines make good living
Christmas trees. Usually when you read about this tree, you find out it
should be grown indoors, which it can, but this Pine has been growing outside
in our tree bed through last year's horrendous cold and heat and is doing
just fine. It is hooked up to a drip system because correct watering is
important to its good health. This is a good tree for people who like
tropical-looking plants. (Editors Note: I have this tree growing in a large
pot outside where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade. Other than
watering it, the only occasional maintenance required is to keep it trim
and tidy. Although a slow grower in our climate, I do prune occasionally for
looks and height. It can get "burned" if exposed to extreme cold;
but this is a hardy tropical plant.)
